As part of the engagement activity for Seaside: Photographed (funded by Arts Council England, shown at John Hansard Gallery from 31 October 2020–23 January 2021), artists were commissioned by each of the exhibition’s hosting venues to create projects with local Early Years groups.
At John Hansard Gallery, Sam Ivin was commissioned to create new artwork with children from Weston Shore Pre-School, Southampton. Aged between 3 and 4-years-old, the children were asked to explore their relationship with the seaside using photography.
Working within the confines of COVID-19 restrictions and periods of national lockdown, Sam adapted how the project could be delivered, with much of it moving online or being carried out remotely. Sam arranged for materials and instructions to be sent to the school, where staff could then assist the children to create their new artwork. In addition, the children were given digital cameras to record the experience of being near the seaside with their families. In these photographs, we see the children exploring beaches, playing with siblings, creating wonky landscapes and capturing the beautiful details of the beach that adults often miss.
The artist and John Hansard Gallery wish to thank all the children and families that took part, extending special thanks to Judith, Jess and Gemma at Weston Shore Pre-School for their generous support.
