Calling artists and designers living in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight!

We are seeking Expressions of Interest from socially engaged artists who champion equality, diversity and inclusion within their practice.

We are working alongside University of Southampton’s PGCE Art & Design students on a new project creating engaging and inspiring spaces for Year 7&8 students in Southampton schools. If you are passionate about developing racial literacy within contemporary visual arts and in educational settings, please read on.

This 2-year project is funded by Freelands Foundation and aims to make safe spaces for experimental, open, and discursive art workshops to boost the confidence and enjoyment of a diverse curriculum. With the support of specialist trainers, time for research and planning and opportunity to devise relevant activities, artists will be asked to deliver accessible workshops where pupils can explore and celebrate their heritage, identities and lived experiences.

This research project is inspired by the recent Visualise Report – Race & inclusion in secondary school art education. Artists will work alongside specialist trainers, University of Southampton, Post Graduate Education students, partner schools and qualified teachers to advocate for change within schools through creative workshops. There is scope to test new workshops approaches, develop resources to be used within education settings, and create ongoing relationships with schools and John Hansard Gallery.

Process:
Shortlisted artists will be invited to a meeting on week of Monday 24 March to find out more about the project and meet the project team and will be invited to an interview on week of Monday 7 April.

Final selected artists will be invited to collaborate the main project, responding to the key themes and programme outline.  This will include a period of training and discussions as well as co-devising workshops for schools.

Fees:
Each shortlisted artist will receive £200 (inclusive of attending the development meeting and interviews as outlined above.

The final selected artists will be invited to join the main project and be part of the Inclusive Practices project.

We are aiming for approximately 90 half-day sessions in school, with artists fees set at £200 per half day (£18,000). The number of days offered will depend on the number of artists we appoint and how many sessions each artist will deliver in schools over the 2-year period. Travel and materials costs are covered by a separate budget.

Please submit your expression of interest (200-word max) outlining your interest and experience and a CV by Friday 14 March to [email protected].

Shortlisted artists will then be invited to a development day to gather more information on the project and will have time to propose an approach to bring to the interview.
