In Darkness and Light brings together selected works (many showing in the UK for the first time) that collectively represent the significant range of Manchot’s practice.

Melanie Manchot works primarily in photography, film, video and installation as part of a participatory practice that foregrounds performance to camera.

Melanie and Berenike will, among other topics, discuss class, human experiences, female filmmakers and process, followed by an audience Q&A.

Melanie Manchot works across visual art and feature film projects to form sustained enquiries into our individual and collective identities. Location based research informs all her projects, and mountainous landscapes are a recurrent theme to address fragile environments in our care. She currently has two feature films in development.

Berenike Jung is a Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Southampton. She is the author of The Invisibilities of Political Torture: The Presence of Absence in US and Chilean Cinema and Television (2016) and co-edited Beyond the Rhetoric of Pain (2019). Her research examines how audiovisual media engage with violence and cultural memory, with a focus on Latin American and Global South cinemas; decolonising film education, and embodied aesthetics of contemporary digital media, especially TikTok.
