Join author Philip Hoare and artist George Shaw as they discuss Hoare’s new book, William Blake and the Sea Monsters of Love, published on 4th Estate.
In his new book, Philip Hoare celebrates the radical, timeless energy of William Blake, whose imagination still washes into our world like a deep blue sea.
Joining Philip will be the acclaimed artist, George Shaw, a lifelong aficiando of Blake’s work. Together they will discuss the lasting legacy of an artist who accepted no limits to the human spirit. When someone tried to explain to Blake that the moon was thousands of miles away, he said that was nonsense. ‘I can go outside and touch it with my stick’, he said.
The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.
As part of the evening’s events, we will be screening Derek Jarman’s first narrative short film, At Low Tide, filmed in Dorset in 1972 – a rare chance to see a work itself influenced by Blake. There will also be a temporary gallery display of work by George Shaw, and Philip Hoare’s book will be available for purchase.
Join us for this very special event and illuminating insight into William Blake.
Doors from 6pm, with the In Conversation starting at 6.30pm. Suitable for ages 16+.
