Screening on our Digital Array, John Hansard Gallery is pleased to present Bella Riza’s film, Evde (2018).

Evde (Turkish for ‘home’) is a documentary exploring experiences of migration and how connections to culture and habitats for belonging are created through the production and distribution of food.

Through the daily activities of a Turkish grocers and bakery in North London, Evde reflects on how roots are laid down in a new place and a unique sense of home and community are created. The film explores cross-cultural experiences, and invites viewers to reflect on their own lives, sense of identity, and relationship to their community.

Bella Riza’s work moves between writing, photography and film to explore representations of memory, personal and collective histories and landscape, often in connection to ideas of belonging.

Her work has been presented at Camden Arts Centre, London (2023); B3 Biennial of the Moving Image, Frankfurt (2022); GIANT, Bournemouth (2022); Nicoletti Contemporary, London (2022); LOOP Barcelona (2021); Platform Asia and Videoclub (2020); Tate St Ives (2019): the Liverpool Biennale (2019) and South London Gallery (2018).

Evde is the third in a series of films that accompany our current exhibitions, looking at various aspects of food, its production, culture and how it can create a sense of home and community.

Evde was originally commissioned by Talkies Community Cinema, in collaboration with Short Sighted Cinema.
